, the labor unions in the process to help elect democrats. the biggest outside groups are the labor unions. when karl rove looked at the 2010 elections, they realize that, while big labor, which spent $400 million helping elect president obama and the democrats in 2008, there was no corollary to that that existed on the right to be able to spend large amounts of money on behalf of the republican candidates for the house and senate. we set a goal of $50 million in 2010 and i was working a crossroads when president obama attacked crossroads could he said we were taking illegally from china. as soon as he said that come within 10 days, which saw an uptick in crossroads. the reason for that was because president obama, by attacking crossroads, identified as as the biggest risk to his existence. and the rest is history. that is kind of were the center- right groups are. in fact, in 2010, people think of crossroads as being the biggest spenders in the 2010 election. we were not. the biggest expenditures were from the american federation of states county and municipal employees. the second bigges

. republican voters are more interested in this election than democrats. the president has a larger lead. he is up seven. the problem for him is a lack of enthusiasm of hispanics and young voters. romney has to do things to make people substantially change the way people feel about him. his approval rating is still under water. the lowest for any presidential nominee at this point in time other than george h.w. bush in 1992. romney is out with his second straight to camera ad in the direct effort to undo damage of the remarks. >> more americans live in poverty than when president obama took office. we should measure our compassion by how many fellow americans are able to get good paying jobs and not how many are on welfare. >> look at these numbers. by a whopping 51 to 28 voters say what they have heard about romney has made them feel more unfavorably there is still a few yellow flags for the president. more people disapprove of how he has handled the situation in libya and egypt than approve. if you want to understand why the president is leading look at this number, economic optimism. 57%

month, hard to believe, till election day, and no issue bigger than jobs, right? >> no doubt about that, randi, and you're right. after what you could consider a tough week for the president coming out of that debate in denver the jobs numbers are a good sign for his re-election bid, a happy sign for the re-election team, but for mitt romney this is fascinating, landi, because the unemployment rate is below 8% for the first time since barack obama came into the white house back in january of 2009. you have heard mitt romney on the campaign trail over and over again, over the last year and a half running for the white house, criticize this president on jobs for the unemployment rate being over 8%. now it is under 8%. now it's time for mr. romney to have to pivot from his favorite line. take a listen to both candidates on the campaign trail yesterday reacting to the jobs numbers. >> today's news should give us some encouragement. it shouldn't be an excuse for the other side to try to talk down the economy just to try to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country's com

numbers, jack, you can't touch those numbers before they're published. >> larry, look, this election is too important to have it hinge on one number. we got this number of 7.8 today, below where the president came in and we have assumptions. what i wanted to see and there's a real debate about this number. larry, the private sector household number, which is done by calling 50,000 people in the hundred plus million population for workers came in with a number of 873,000 people. that is the highest number since 1983, booming reagan years when you were there. >> i understand. i don't feel like defending bureaucrats left and right, it's not my favorite thing. but these guys, as the labor secretary said, they use surveys and models, it's only a 50 or 60,000 sample but that's nothing new. that's the way it's been for as long as the data is kept. you got 600,000 part-time workers. that was the biggest piece of it, an increase of 600,000 and self-employed went up 118,000 with some other factor, you get your 873,000. now, jack, here's my point. these numbers are subject to huge revisions, ok

for politics. it's 37 days until the election day. three days until the first presidential debate. this morning, a stark reminder of the longest war in american history, the american military death toll inside afghanistan has now reached 2,000, let's get to that developing news, nbc's tia abawi is in kabul, afghanistan, mike taibbi standing by. what happened with the latest attack. >> hi there, craig, well this occurred yesterday just west of the capital, kabul. it happened at a checkpoint on highway 1, apparently a new checkpoint where americans were there apparently training afghan security forces there were american service members as well as contractors at that checkpoint. there were approached by afghan soldiers, apparently a conversation ensued and then an afghan soldier then fired at the americans, killing one of the service members and a contractor. a contractor that was there to train the afghan security forces. the americans then fired back at the afghans, killing at least three of them this makes it the 38th insider attack that we've seen in afghanistan this year alone. killing at le
